Rummy Rules

Rummy is a card game with 2 decks of cards played by two to six players. Each player is dealt 13 cards in the game and a random card is selected as the Wild Joker. The first kind is an open deck, while the other is a closed deck. The players can either pick a card from the open deck if it makes an excellent addition to their melds or they can pick a card from a closed deck before discarding their card to the open deck. Drawing or discarding cards is necessary to form valid sets and sequences of the 13 cards. In order to win, the player has to arrange or group 13 cards into valid sequences or sets (at least one pure sequence and other valid sequences or sets).

Let's learn about sets and sequences:

Forming Sets

A set is a collection of three or more cards with the same value but of different suits. It is possible to include a joker in a set.
There are two types of sets: valid sets and invalid sets.
    Examples: Valid Sets:
  1. A♥ A♣ A♦(all Aces are from different suits)
  2. 8♥ 8♣ 8♦ 8♠ (all 8 cards of the same value are from different suits)
  3. 6♦ Q♠ 6♠ 6♥ (Q♠ acts as a wild joker in a set)
  4. 5♦ 5♣ 5♠ PJ (Printed Joker replaces 5 to form a set)

Invalid Set

The Invalid Set consists of two or more cards with the same suit.
Example: Invalid Set:
Q♥ Q♥ Q♦ (This set has two Qs of the same suit ♥ which makes it an invalid set)

Forming Sequences

A Sequence is a collection of 3 or more cards of the same suit. Rummy has 2 types of sequences:

Pure Sequence

Pure Sequences are formed by three or more cards of the same suit placed consecutively. Jokers or Wild Cards cannot be part of a Pure Sequence.

    Example:
  1. 5♥ 6♥ 7♥ (three cards of the same suit arranged in consecutive order, no joker/wild card is used).
  2. 5♥ 6♥ 7♥ (3 cards of the same suit in consecutive order without a joker or wild card)

Valid Sequences

Joker cards are used to replace the missing number in a set of three or more cards of the same suit in which a joker card is or are used to complete the set.

    Example:
  1. 6♦ 7♦ Q♠ 9♦ (Q♠ is used as wild joker to replace 8♠ and to form a valid sequence)
  2. 5♠ Q♥ 7♠ 8♠ PJ (Q♥ is a wild joker that is replacing 6♠ and the Printed Joker is replacing 9♠)

The player who forms the combinations mentioned above first wins!

Splash13 Glossary!

Rummy has its own language, so you may get baffled while you indulge in the game if you don't understand it. Take a look and become an expert

Dealer

The Dealer is the player who deals the cards to the other players. While some players choose the lowest card as the dealer, online rummy uses an automated dealer and each player gets 13 cards automatically.

Pack of Cards/Deck

Card packs or decks are collections of 52 cards containing 13 cards of each suit - Spades, Clubs, Hearts and Diamonds.

Draw

“Draw” is a common term in online rummy. At the time of their move, a player draws a card from the stacks of cards on the table. Each game has one discarding slot and one picking slot.

Discard

Discard occurs when the card is placed in the discard pile as you don't think it will be useful and will not help you win any opportunities. Discarding is simply eliminating the card from your hand.

Drop

During the game, a player can leave or drop out. This option is called Drop. If a player drops, they get penalty points depending on whether it was the first or middle drop.

Declare/Declaration

'Declare' is how players end a rummy game when they've met the objective of the game, i.e., formed the desired sets and sequences. After meeting the objective of the game, the player can tap on declare.

Deadwood/Unmatched Cards

Deadwood refers to ungrouped cards. After a game, the remaining cards that did not contribute to any sequence are called unmatched cards. So, these cards are added as points.

Round

As players play rummy online on Splash13, they will have to make their moves turn by turn. All players finish their first moves, then it's called the first round.

Rummy Table

In rummy, players sit around the table while the game is played. Around the rummy table, two to six players can play at once.

Pure Sequence

Pure sequences are formed by groups of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. You can't use a wild or printed joker to make a pure sequence.

Impure Sequence

A player forms an impure sequence when they run out of cards of the same suit and use the Joker instead. As we can see, the Joker is very important in the rummy card game.

Shuffle

The cards are usually dealt before the game starts. It's called shuffling. It involves rearranging and blending the cards in order to avoid any repetitive distribution.

Titlu

A common term for 21 card rummy players. A player picks a random card at the beginning and uses it as a wild card.

Trinala

In 21 card rummy, when a player can form a sequence of cards with the same suit and rank, it is called Trinala.

Wild Card

According to rummy card rules, a wild card is an auxiliary card that helps you complete sets and impure sequences.
